The Waites Apartments, located at the corner of 7th Avenue South and 21st Street South in Birmingham’s Southside, is starting the pre-leasing of 45 units.

“The prime location of The Waites makes it an ideal residence for anyone looking to relocate downtown or for students, residents, interns, physicians, professors and young professionals attending, working or living near UAB,” said property manager Lauren Watts. “We encourage anyone looking for a new home to stop by and see all that The Waites has to offer.”

The first residents of The Waites are scheduled to move in on June 1, the company said. The model unit is slated to open for tours starting Wednesday, March 15.

Floor plans include one-and-two-bedroom apartments ranging from 712 to 1,120 square feet. Rent ranges from $1,375 to $1,800.

The units are equipped with upscale amenities including chef-inspired kitchens with burner gas ranges or induction ranges, oversized gourmet kitchen islands with granite countertops, stainless-steel appliances, custom cabinetry, keyless entry systems, smart thermostats, USB charging outlets and wall-mounted 55-inch televisions in living space.

Each unit also has open-concept living spaces, walk-in closets and a washer and dryer.

The $16.5 million development provides several community amenities, including: elevator access to floors, pet-friendly residences, 24-hour parcel concierge system, 24-hour fitness center, study/conference room and multi-level private parking.

The Waites is named after the Waite’s bakery and deli that was a Southside landmark known for its ice cream and cakes for more than 60 years.

And, fittingly due to its history, The Waites features more than 16,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. Announced tenants include Taco Mama, Farm Burger, Smoothie King and Roll Up, a sushi restaurant.

Parking for retail tenants and residents will be in the rear of the property.

“The Waites Bakery was an iconic Birmingham establishment, along with its building,” Rodney Barstein, chief development officer for Retail Specialists, said. “When we acquired this property, we knew we had to use pieces of the original limestone from the building and incorporate it into the new building, and that’s exactly what we did. We are excited about showcasing this piece of history and opening the leasing to future residents.”

Cooper Construction began demolition of the former site in April 2016. Construction started two months later.
