Developer Retail Specialists said its mixed-use development at the corner of Seventh Avenue South and Richard Arrington Boulevard will include future tenants Farm Burger, Blaze Pizza and Smoothie King.

The project on Birmingham’s Southside will break ground April 27 at 4:30 p.m.

But the new tenants aren’t the only change at the project. The development, formerly known as Central City, is now called The Waites. “In the process of working with the Design Review Committee, the zoning committee, and others on this project, there was a lot of discussion around the historical significance of the former Waites Bakery building,” said Rodney Barstein, executive vice president at Retail Specialists. “We thought renaming the project would be a good way to honor that history.”

Barstein said the building isn’t listed in any historic registers or even old enough to be considered historic, but even still many local residents have memories of going to the old Waites Bakery at 2101 Seventh Ave. S. He said there is also work underway to preserve as much of the original limestone on the building as possible.

The Waites will mark the debut of Farm Burger in Birmingham. It previously said it was looking for a location in the Magic City. Blaze Pizza will be opening its first Alabama location at the development.

Smoothie King, on the other hand, already has several locations in metro Birmingham. But the chain has previously told the BBJ it was looking for a downtown location.

The Waites is one of a number of mixed-use projects under construction in Birmingham’s city center.

Retail Specialists previously said the $13 million project will include will include 45 apartment units and 15,000 square feet of retail space. It will also offer covered outdoor seating and designated retail parking.
